How the pace calculator works
Running pace is simply your time divided by your distance. This calculator lets you solve for whichever value you are missing. Planning a race? Enter the distance and your goal finish time to get the pace you need to hold. Just finished a run? Enter the distance and time to see the pace you ran. Want to know how far a workout will take? Enter distance and pace to get the time.
Using splits to race smarter
The splits table breaks your target pace into the cumulative time you should hit at each mile or kilometer. Most strong races are run on even or slightly negative splits, so use the table to avoid going out too fast; our guide to race pacing strategy covers why the fast start costs more than it saves. You can switch between miles and kilometers at any time, and the calculator converts your inputs automatically. To compare paces side by side across every distance, see the full running pace chart. For which pace to run in training rather than on race day, read understanding your training paces.
A pace number is a starting point, not a plan. Knowing you need 8:10 per mile does not tell you which workouts build that fitness or how to taper for race day. That is where Vaast comes in.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate running pace?
- Pace is your total time divided by the distance you covered. For example, running 6 miles in 54 minutes is a pace of 9:00 per mile. Enter any two of distance, time, and pace above and the calculator solves for the third.
- How do I convert between minutes per mile and minutes per kilometer?
- One mile is 1.609 kilometers, so per-kilometer pace is faster on the clock than per-mile pace. Switch the units toggle and the calculator converts your distance and pace for you.
- What are running splits?
- Splits are your cumulative time at each mile or kilometer. Even, steady splits are usually the most efficient way to race. The splits table shows the time you should hit at each marker for your target pace.
- How do I turn a goal pace into a training plan?
- Knowing your goal pace is the first step. Vaast takes your goal and current fitness and builds a full periodized plan with the exact sessions and paces to get you there, then adapts it as you train.
