How Vaast builds your training plan

A look under the hood at how Vaast turns a goal and a race date into a full, periodized endurance plan, and keeps it in sync with your life.

Most training apps hand you a template: pick a plan off the shelf, follow it for 16 weeks, and hope it fits. Vaast works differently. You tell it your goal, and it generates a plan built around you, then keeps it in sync as your training actually unfolds.

Here's what happens under the hood.

It starts with your goal

Every plan begins with three things: the event, the date, and your available training time. A marathon 16 weeks out with 6 hours a week is a very different plan from a 70.3 twenty weeks out with 9 hours, and Vaast treats them that way from the first session.

Crucially, weekly volume follows the hours you tell it, not whatever your watch logged last month. You're planning the training you want, not extrapolating the training you happened to do.

Periodization, automatically

Vaast structures the weeks into real training phases (base, build, peak, and taper) and distributes intensity so each block builds on the last. The result is a plan that progresses: easy weeks to absorb load, harder weeks to drive adaptation, and a taper that leaves you sharp on race day.

Why periodization matters

Fitness isn't built by doing the same week on repeat. It comes from a rhythm of stress and recovery: enough load to adapt, enough rest to absorb it. Periodization is just that rhythm, planned out to peak on the day that matters.

Every session has a purpose

No filler. Each workout carries an intent (an easy aerobic run, a threshold set, a long brick) with structure and targets, not just a duration to fill. When you open tomorrow's session, you know why it's there and what it's meant to do.

Want to sanity-check your target paces yourself? Our free running pace calculator solves pace, time, or distance in seconds, and the pace chart shows min/km to min/mile equivalents with finish times for every distance.

It adapts when life does

This is the part a static plan can't do. Get sick, travel, or land a race-date change, and Vaast re-plans: it keeps what you've completed, clears the road ahead, and rebuilds the remaining weeks around the new reality, with the race back on the right day.

That's the whole idea: not a plan you fight to keep up with, but one that keeps up with you.
