The 5K looks like a speed event and is mostly an aerobic one. Even at the front of the field, the large majority of the energy comes from the aerobic system, which is why runners who train only fast tend to stall, and why the athletes who race 5Ks well are usually the ones with a serious volume base underneath the sharpness.
The training question is not speed versus endurance. It is how much sharpening you can add on top of an aerobic base without eroding the base itself.
What an 8-week 5K block looks like
The shortest block and the sharpest. Volume matters less than at the long distances, and the hard sessions get faster as race day approaches.

Illustrative for a runner peaking near 30 miles a week. The shape is what matters, not the numbers: your own peak depends on your base, your history, and the hours you actually have.
How long you need
Six to ten weeks of specific work, on top of whatever base you already have. Eight is a good default. The block is short because you are sharpening rather than building: the aerobic foundation should already be there, and if it is not, the honest answer is to spend a few months running more before worrying about 5K sessions.
The key sessions
VO2 max intervals. The signature 5K session, because 5K race effort sits close to VO2 max for most runners. Repeats of 3 to 5 minutes with recovery jogs, at roughly current 5K effort. Classic examples are 5 to 6 times 1000m, or 4 to 5 times 4 minutes.
Threshold. Still valuable, even here. It raises how much of that ceiling you can hold, and it costs far less recovery than interval work, which lets you keep training. Tempo runs of 20 minutes or cruise intervals once a week.
Strides and short reps. Short, fast, relaxed running with full recovery. Not lung work but form and economy, and the most commonly skipped piece by runners who feel strong yet flat.
Easy volume. Still the majority of the week. The 5K is aerobic; the base is what lets you absorb the intervals.
How hard is too hard
The 5K's specific danger is that its sessions are short enough to feel manageable and hard enough to accumulate real fatigue. Two quality sessions a week is right for most runners. Three is for experienced athletes in a short sharpening block, and only briefly.
If your interval times are drifting slower week to week, that is not toughness to push through. It is the signal that the easy days have not been easy enough, or that there have been too many hard ones.
Sharpening is temporary
A sharpening block works because it sits on a base. It cannot be extended indefinitely: hold peak 5K sharpness for too long and performance falls away. Plan a target race rather than trying to stay race-ready year round.
Race day
The 5K forgives a conservative start more than any other distance forgives an aggressive one. Go out 10 seconds per mile too fast and the last kilometre becomes damage control.
Run the first kilometre controlled, settle into a rhythm you could sustain, and start pushing from about 3K. The last kilometre should be the hardest thing you do all week.

Common mistakes
- Racing every interval session. Intervals are meant to be repeatable, not maximal. If you cannot finish the last rep at the same pace as the first, you started too fast.
- Dropping easy volume to add speed. The base is what makes the sharpening work.
- No strides. Cheap, quick, and the difference between feeling strong and feeling smooth.
- Racing too often. Every 5K is a hard session with a two-day recovery cost.
