Periodization is the least glamorous idea in endurance training and the one that separates a training plan from a list of workouts. It is simply this: training is organised into phases, each with a different job, sequenced so the fitness they build arrives on the day you need it.
Doing the same week on repeat produces a runner who is permanently moderately fit. Periodization produces one who is exceptionally fit on a chosen date, which is what racing asks for.
Volume and intensity trade places
Early in a block you do a lot of easy work. Late in a block you do less work, harder and more specific to your race. The crossover between the two is what periodization means in practice.

Both lines are scaled to their own peak, so they can share one axis. The shapes are the point, not the values: how steeply each rises and falls depends on your event, your history, and how long the block is.
The core mechanism
Fitness comes from a cycle: apply a training stress, recover, adapt, repeat at a slightly higher level. Two things follow from that, and periodization is the practical consequence of both.
Recovery is not the absence of training, it is part of it. Adaptation happens during the recovery, not during the hard session. Training that never lets you recover accumulates fatigue faster than fitness, which is why well-built blocks pull volume back roughly every third or fourth week.
Different stresses build different things, and they interfere with each other. Large volumes of easy running and large volumes of very hard running are hard to do well simultaneously. Sequencing them, rather than mixing everything all the time, lets each be done properly.
The phases
Base. Build the aerobic engine. High volume relative to the rest of the block, nearly all easy, with intensity limited to strides or light threshold work to keep turnover. This is the phase people skip and the one that determines the ceiling for everything after it.
Build. Volume plateaus near its peak while quality increases. Threshold sessions lengthen, and work at race-specific intensities appears. The engine built in base gets converted into usable fitness.
Peak. The highest-demand weeks: the longest runs and the most race-specific sessions. Volume may already be edging down while specificity climbs. Also where injury risk is highest, which is why the next phase is not optional.
Taper. Volume falls substantially while intensity is largely retained. You are not building here, you are shedding accumulated fatigue so the fitness you already have can express itself. The classic error is cutting intensity along with volume, which leaves you rested and flat.
Volume and intensity trade places
The chart above is the whole idea in one picture. Early in a block you do a lot of work at low intensity. Late in a block you do less work at higher and more race-specific intensity. The lines cross.
This is why the same session can be right in one phase and wrong in another. VO2 max intervals in week two of a base phase displace the easy volume that phase exists to build. Long easy runs in race week displace the freshness that taper exists to create. Neither session is bad; both can be badly timed.
Specificity increases as the race approaches
The general rule threading through every phase: training becomes more like your race as race day nears. Early work builds general capacity. Late work rehearses the specific demand, at the specific pace, for the specific duration.
What it looks like in practice
The race-distance guides each show a block for their distance, and the shape is recognisably the same across all four: waves of building volume, a lighter week to absorb it, a peak, then a taper. What changes is the length of the block and how much of it is spent fast.
- Marathon: the longest block, most volume, threshold and marathon-pace work dominating the quality.
- Half marathon: shorter, with threshold work carrying the largest share.
- 10K: threshold and VO2 max in balance.
- 5K: shortest block, largest fraction of fast running, sitting on a base built earlier.
Common misconceptions
"Periodization is only for elites." The opposite. Athletes with limited hours benefit most from sequencing, because they cannot afford sessions that work against each other.
"You need a perfect 16-week block." You need a sequence and a direction. A block interrupted by a bad fortnight is still periodized; it just needs its remaining weeks rebuilt around where you actually are.
"More phases means more sophisticated." Base, build, peak, taper covers almost every recreational need. Elaborate sub-phase schemes rarely survive contact with a real calendar.
"You can hold peak fitness." You cannot, and trying is how people arrive at their goal race stale. Peak fitness is deliberately temporary, which is why you choose a date.
Why plans break, and what actually fixes it
Periodization assumes the sequence survives. In practice you get ill in the base phase, travel through the build, and lose a week to a niggle at the peak. The printed plan has no answer, because it was written for a version of your life that did not happen.
The fix is not a better template. It is re-sequencing: deciding what the remaining weeks should now contain given the fitness you actually have and the date that has not moved.
