The Norwegian method is the most discussed training system in distance running, and one of the most confidently misdescribed. Before anything else, a distinction that most coverage gets wrong.
Two different Norwegian things
The Norwegian method is the lactate-guided, double-threshold system associated with Marius Bakken and the Ingebrigtsen brothers. The Norwegian 4x4 is a VO2 max interval protocol from NTNU, developed by Jan Helgerud and Jan Hoff and studied extensively by Ulrik Wisløff's group. Same country, unrelated systems, routinely conflated. This guide is about the first.
A Norwegian method week
Two hard days, and both of them are doubles. Everything else is easy. The method is not about training hard more often, it is about training controlled, twice a day, on the two days that carry the load.

Where it came from
The approach was developed by Marius Bakken, a Norwegian 5000m runner who spent years experimenting on himself, reportedly across more than five thousand lactate measurements, and built a framework around what the numbers told him. It reached the wider world when Gjert Ingebrigtsen applied it systematically with his sons Henrik, Filip, and Jakob, whose results made the method impossible to ignore.
What makes it distinctive is not any single session. It is the constraint: intensity is controlled by measurement rather than by feel or by the clock.
The core idea
Most training systems ask how hard a session should be. This one asks how much quality work you can accumulate without compromising the next session.
The answer it arrives at is a large volume of work at a controlled sub-threshold intensity, concentrated into two days a week, with each of those days split into two separate sessions. Everything else is easy.
Three things make it work:
Intensity is capped, deliberately. The target window sits between the first and second lactate thresholds, commonly cited as roughly 2.0 to 4.5 mmol/L, with Bakken pointing at or below about 3.0 as the productive zone. That is meaningfully easier than a traditional all-out tempo run. Staying under the ceiling is what allows the volume.
Volume is split. Two sessions six to ten hours apart accumulate more quality work than one long session, because the second half is not run on the fatigue of the first. This is what "double threshold" means.
Everything else is genuinely easy. The hard days are only sustainable because the rest of the week asks nothing. The easy running is not filler, it is the thing that makes two double days a week survivable.
You will see the easy share of the week quoted anywhere between about 60 and 80 percent, and the disagreement is really an accounting one. Because sub-threshold work is deliberately controlled, some descriptions count it in the low-intensity bucket, which makes the week look like a conventional 80/20 split. Counted separately, the threshold dose is far higher than a typical polarized plan delivers. That higher threshold volume, not the easy percentage, is the distinctive part.
Why lactate rather than heart rate
Heart rate drifts with heat, sleep, caffeine, and accumulated fatigue, and lags behind changes in effort. Pace ignores hills, wind, and surface. Lactate is a direct measurement of what the muscle is actually doing right now, which is why it can be used as a live cap.
That is also the honest limitation for most people: the method's precision depends on a tool that most runners do not own and would not enjoy using. A lactate meter and the strips for it are not expensive by the standards of running gear, but taking finger-prick samples mid-session is a real commitment.
What recreational runners can take from it
The elite version does not transfer. The weekly volume is far beyond what most runners should attempt, and without measurement the intensity cap becomes guesswork. But three principles do transfer, and they are arguably the whole point:
Run your quality work easier than you think. The single most useful takeaway. Most self-coached runners run tempo sessions too hard, which limits how much they can do and how soon they can do it again. Controlled threshold work, stopping well short of a hard effort, is more repeatable and more productive.
Do more of it, less hard. Volume of quality beats intensity of quality, provided the intensity is capped. Two shorter threshold sessions in a week you can absorb beat one heroic one that costs you three days.
Protect the easy days. The method collapses without them.
If you want to approximate the intensity cap without a lactate meter, threshold heart rate is the closest practical proxy. Where it gets oversold
Worth saying plainly: this is a system built for and around full-time athletes, and much of the online enthusiasm for it skips that. Double threshold days assume you can train twice in one day, recover properly between, and run high easy volume around it. If you run four times a week, the binding constraint on your improvement is almost certainly not the sophistication of your threshold sessions.
The general principles above will help you. Copying the elite week will not.
The part that is genuinely hard
The method's real difficulty is not knowing the structure. It is holding the intensity cap session after session, and deciding when the accumulated load means today's double should become a single.
That judgment is what the lactate meter is buying: an objective read on whether you are inside the productive window or past it.
